WilliamPene du Bois was a widely recognized author and illustrator of children'sbooks. Throughout a prolific career that spanned five decades, he illustratedmore than fifty books--half of those his own--and garnered severaldistinguished awards, including the Newbery Medal and two Caldecott HonorAwards. As evidenced by such popular works as The Twenty-one Balloons andhis "Otto" books, he was best known for artfully combining adventure, fantasy, and humor. His characters are essentially good, though frequentlyeccentric and absurd, and even his villains are more foolish than evil. Hisillustrations, too, were acclaimed for their detail, inventiveness, andtechnical skill.- Paris Review
His first workof fiction for children was Elizabeth the Cow Ghost (1963), followed by GiantOtto (1937). In addition to writing and illustrating his own books, Pène duBois illustrated books written by Jules Verne, IsaacBashevis Singer, Rumer Godden, Claire Huchet Bishop and JohnSteinbeck, as well as magazine articles and advertisements.
